Description:
Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) is an increasingly important approach for identifying best practices in the public health field. At its best, EBM enables an effective balancing of data, professional input, and patient preferences. This, in turn, produces improved health outcomes, reduces costs, and yields greater transparency and accountability in the decision-making process. On the flip side, there are challenges and risks associated with EBM approaches to healthcare, ranging from disagreements about what constitutes “evidence” to the need to tailor general approaches to specific patients. Our discussion begins with an overview of EBM principles, including its associated benefits and challenges. We then focus on the potential applicability of the EBM philosophy to cyber public health.
