Workshop on 1/23/2025: Hacked to Pieces? The Effects of Ransomware Attacks on Hospitals and Patients
Happy new year!
This month, the Ostrom Workshop Cyber Public Health Working Group will resume its workshop series with a presentation titled “Hacked to Pieces? The Effects of Ransomware Attacks on Hospitals and Patients” which will be led by Dr. Hannah Neprash.
Dr. Hannah Neprash is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota. She studies health economics, focusing on how health care providers respond to financial and non-financial incentives. Her research uses novel sources of data to examine how physician decision-making drives utilization, spending, access, and quality in health care. She is particularly interested in research questions that will inform evidence-based policy during a time of rapid transformation in health care payment and delivery systems.**Note: This session will be recorded.**
As cybercriminals increasingly target healthcare, hospitals face the growing threat of ransomware attacks. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that prevents users from accessing electronic systems and demands a ransom to restore access. This presentation will explore the takeaways from this paper, where Dr. Neprash et al create and link a database of hospital ransomware attacks to Medicare claims data and The effects of ransomware attacks on hospital operations and patient outcomes are quantified.
